Calgary Citizen Newsletter Thursday Aug. 8

Good morning !

I’m still writing you from mid-west America (Iowa to be exact) but now it’s time to adventure back to the city this weekend. The great thing about being able to work remotely and travel at will means I still don’t know if I will be flying back from Minneapolis or driving through Detroit to Windsor to visit my grandma to then fly home from there. I also still have a chance to drive through Montana this weekend and just enjoy the scenery and skip the flights altogether, which is generally my preferred way. There’s something (many things!) about flying lately that just makes me prefer to hit the road, plus, then I can get awesome pics and eat my way through the U.S.A on the way home. Have a great weekend!

"This news is not what any of us wanted to hear.”

Those are the words Mayor Jyoti Gondek is sharing with Calgarians based on new information that additional urgent repairs are needed to the Bearspaw South Feeder Main based on analysis of recent results. Officials say that while this is not an emergency situation like it was in June, it does mean urgent repair work is needed by the end of September.

“That important information is allowing us to immediately act to protect our water system against potential breaks. To everyone in the Calgary region, particularly residents and businesses in Bowness and Montgomery, I understand how much this impacts your lives. You have my word that we will continue to do everything we can to improve the stability and security of water in our city."

The city says timing is crucial for managing the city’s water supply and to facilitate the urgent repairs, the South Bearspaw Feeder Main needs to be turned off starting Aug. 26 until the end of September. During this time, the city will return to Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions.

For now, the city remains in Stage 1 Outdoor Water Restrictions until work begins the week of Aug. 26 with teams working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

That means Calgarians and businesses are asked to limit their non-essential indoor water use:

  • 3-minute showers

  • Skipping flushes where possible

  • Only running full loads of laundry and dishes

  • Businesses will be asked to aim to reduce indoor water use by 25%

In case you missed it the first time

First we gave you our favourite dog-friendly patios. Now, we share our new patio picks.

Buon Giorno is the same Italian you’ve grown to love, but with a new 17th Ave. SW spot and a new patio to enjoy. // Instagram

There’s nothing better than enjoying some drinks and food on a sunny day in Calgary. We all have our favourite spots to check out but did you know the city has a few new patios to add to the list? Here are three that we simply can’t wait to check out!

Buon Giorno located at 1201 17 Ave. SW: It may have a new home on 17 Ave. but this is the same Italian staple that has spent 40 years nestled on this popular avenue. Come for the classic food, and stay for the classy patio.

Calcutta Cricket Club located at 1213 1 St. SW: Calcutta Cricket Club recently moved locations and that means it was able to add not one but two new patios to its new location; one on the front and a more peaceful one out back. Check them out!

Connie & John’s located at 618 Confluence Way SE: This new patio is casually situated on top of the historic Simmons Building on East Village’s river edges and we can’t get enough of the view!

Where to eat and drink

🍴 Cōchu Chocolatier: Local chocolatier Anne has been creating handmade bonbons and decadent chocolate since 2017. Visit her flagship East Village store or enjoy her exquisite creations at local spots such as Chinook Centre’s A-Ok Cafe inside Aritzia and all Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters, to name a few.

🍴 Primary Colours: Have you checked out this new lunch/brunch and dinner spot in Britannia led by Chef Matthias at the helm yet? Each dish uses fresh local ingredients and just the right touch of fancy.

Things to do

🎟️ Goat Yoga: There are just a couple of weekends left to do the downward dog with cute baby goats so get down to Granary Road before this opportunity ends on Aug. 24. Don’t wait too long; there’s limited spots left.

🎟️ Kensington Night Market: If you’re looking for a last-minute date night idea, check out the Kensington Night Market tonight. It’s free to attend and there’s no shortage of cool shops to peruse while eating, drinking and supporting local biz.
